Summary:
This is a good beginner to an intermediate level drone. I can see this drone being used for short recreational flights with the primary goal of taking a quick picture from the sky and then returning to the ground.
What Comes With It:
I found the user’s manual very easy to understand, while still being thorough. I highly recommend reading the whole manual before your first flight so that you know all the features that can help you be a better pilot.
Everything you need (including extra propellers) is in the box with the exception of a USB wall adapter. Optional equipment that is not included is a mobile device if you want to use the app, and a virtual reality headset for your phone if you want to fly the drone that way.
I liked the size of the drone and the fact that it can fold up. This makes it much more plausible that I might take it on a hike to get my picture on a mountain top.
A bonus on the controller is that I found that my iPhone 6s Plus fit into the holder, even with the phone case still on it!
Flight:
I was pleased that there was no need to calibrate this drone before taking off. It made it more fun to just turn on the drone, pair the remote, and start flying.
The automatic takeoff did not seem to work. The propellers turned on, but there was no automatic lift. The automatic landing button does work well, however.
The drone hovered in the position very well, with no need for any trimming. I also found the flight very smooth. I did not fly in any wind, so I don’t know how it performs in gusty conditions.
I did not notice any difference when turning the “optical flow” mode off and on. I believe it is intended to help the drone hover in position, but again, I noticed no difference.
I thought that the “headless” mode was better explained in this version of the user’s manual. It seemed to work as described, where the joysticks became relative to the launch position, and the drone rotation no longer mattered.
I thought the speed of the drone was a bit slow, even at the fastest speed with a full battery. For me, this detracts from the fun a bit. The speed is good for getting pictures, but not for zooming around.
Virtual Reality View:
I really like the VR feature. It is very fun to look through the eyes of the drone and fly around. I found that the second flight mode (labeled MODE 1) is much more intuitive for VR flight. It changes the traditional drone controls so that the left joystick has forward, back, turn right and turn left and the right joystick has thrust and strafing right and left. Note: In-flight MODE 1, to pair the transmitter with the drone, the right joystick is used instead of the left, which I did not see in the manual. Watching the camera screen or using VR can be a bit disorienting at low altitudes because the camera will point straight down at the ground when the drone moves forward. However, at higher altitudes, this does not seem to be a problem.
Camera:
The video stream from the camera is very good. It is smooth and fairly fluent. The camera quality is not great. It is good for getting a general idea of landscapes, but do not expect high detail photos or videos. Facial features from just a few meters away are blurred. The camera can be angled vertically, but this is a static setting that must be done before launch.
Battery:
I like that this drone came with 2 batteries! Unfortunately, I think that the second battery is necessary because the flight time feels a bit short at 10 minutes per battery. At first, I found the battery difficult to remove from the drone, but after a few battery exchanges, it got easier to pry the battery out.
Mobile Application:
I was disappointed that instructions for the mobile application were just button labels. I needed to infer what most of the buttons were meant to do.
The user guide makes it sound like the app will automatically connect to the drone‘s wifi signal. In reality, you need to first connect to the drone in your mobile device’s wifi settings, and then launch the app.
I like that the drone can be completely controlled from the app! However, an undocumented part of that is that you cannot (and should not) pair the remote if you want to control the drone with the app. Pressing the power button and takeoff button is what is needed to get the app connected to the drone.
There are multiple methods of controlling the drone from the app. The app has joysticks that work like the controller. There is also a “gravity” mode, where you tilt the phone to steer the drone. There is also a “TapFly” mode where you can draw a path for the drone to follow. However, the adjustments seem tiny to me. I could see the drone adjusting, but it seemed to make such minor steering changes that the feature is not helpful.
I could not get the hand gestures to work for taking pictures or video. I also could not get voice commands to work (mostly because I did not know what commands I could give).
Conclusion:
This drone is fun! I think the mobile app could use a tutorial, but I like all the functionality that has been packed into such a small and inexpensive package.
