Safe Dual-Charging Power in a Single Cable – HyperJuice 60W

Do you often find your desk, kitbag, knapsack, or purse littered with a rat’s nest of tangled and fraying cables?  Now it’s virtually impossible to achieve a picture-perfect arrangement, but you just might be able to reduce some of your clutter with the HyperJuice 60W Hybrid Cable, which combines multiple functionalities into a single device.

Created by Hyper, a subsidiary of Targus – known for their carry cases and accessories have come out with this convenient premium 2-in-1 accessory deemed to help your gadgets charged up.

While cables aren’t necessarily sexy front-page news, in today’s world where technology is necessity, try getting by when they malfunction.

Dual-charging hybrid

This dual-charging cable features a USB-C connector on one end and a T-shaped dual USB-C & Apple Lightning connector on the other, making it ideal for users with multiple devices needing different charging interfaces. You can only plug one in at a time.

The cable is durable. I appreciate that it doesn’t feel like it’ll tear apart if you tug on it. It has solid connectors and it’s much thicker and more robust than a standard Apple Cable. It’s malleable and made of super-soft silicone reinforced at each end to avoid premature fraying. The design makes it tangle free, great for when trying to fish it out from under your desk.

It can charge thousands of devices. Beyond the typical devices like the iPhone, iPad, Android and other smartphones and tablets, you can also charge up laptops like select MacBook models. Paired with the right charger, as the name suggests, the HyperJuice 60W offers universal 60-watt power delivery. It also supports USB-C PD fast-charging to charge compatible up to 30 to 50 percent faster than a standard cable.

MFi certified for safety

Most importantly, the HyperJuice 60W is MFI-certified (Made For iPhone/iPad etc.) Meaning, it’s also certified and endorsed by Apple and meets its rigid standards and safe to use for your device. Non-certified or knockoff cables have the potential to fail prematurely and damage your device by short circuiting or overheating. MFi certified cables have a built-in custom chip in the Lightning connector to regulate the voltage and also maintain data integrity amongst other things to prevent this.

Case consideration

While the HyperJuice cable is built to be durable and safe, it’s also important to consider how it passes through the protective case or connects to charger you’re using to your device’s charging port.

This is my experience with one of the two iPhones I use.

My iPhone 8 and iPhone 12 Pro are housed in two different Catalyst case models. The former is more stylish and slim while the latter has a military-grade drop-rating. It has a thicker bumper so the the Lightning connector access is further recessed. And because the molding on the Lightning connector housing on the cable is sculpted into the T-connector, it’s a little wider at the base, it cannot fully fit through the case cut-out and snap snuggly into place to maintain a stable connection.

Just something to think about before you buy.

Overall, with that one caveat, the cable is still impressive. Giving it a few twists and turns and testing it a variety of devices, the cable performed extremely well. And with 60 watt delivery I appreciate that it could be used to charge my MacBook Air and eliminate the need for yet an extra cable. And while I may not be able to use it with my iPhone 12 Pro, there are certainly many other places it’s already being used.

HyperJuice 60W Hybrid cable (5 ft. / 1.5m) is available in two colours, black or white and retails for $29.99 U.S. (approximately $46 CAD) and available on Amazon.ca or from Hypershop.

Yes, it costs more than a typical cable but well worth the extra investment for peace of mind. After all, is it worth the risk of frying your $1,500 phone to save a few dollars on a cheap cable?
